I personally prefer defensive works.

* To begin preparations, I would of course hoard stable foodstuffs. Grain, salted dried meat, pickled vegetables, the basics. You don't need fancy feast for emergency supplies. * Next, I would collect ammunition and repair materials. Why are these two not in different sections you ask? Because stones and quick lime mortar are both effective killers of men and building blocks of civilization. Raw timbers are also a thing to stock up on en masse. Its cheap, builds various things and burning logs are pretty nasty to push into. Of course there are other things too, like arrows or pitch/tar but these are also more expensive and not as fast to obtain in large quantities. * The third order of business would be to construct curtain walls and a secondary gatehouse within the city to prevent breaches. For the sake of time and cost, they would be made of mortar covered timber retaining a large quantity of earth instead of stone. To be extra cheeky, the dirt can be obtained by digging a ditch at the base of the hill which the city sits on. * Fourth on my list would be to construct basic hoardings over the gatehouses, as well as basic stone shingled overhead protection on timber frames for as much of the wall as can be. As a bonus, I would add a gutter to the overhead frames to collect arrows like the greedy merchant lord I am. * The last plan I would have is to commission a lot of cordage or metal chain if I can get some. These are for counter rams extended over the walls. They consist of a simple log suspended from both ends, which is pulled up on one side then let go to swing across the wall. By sweeping along the wall, siege ladders, enemy rams, and siege towers are sure to sustain damage. * As my final plan, winches and buckets would be placed in all sections of the wall. These are for dumping water on the invaders. Water turns soil into mud, saps heat and makes things rather slippery. With a decent water source from the dike, it costs nothing as well.
