The underlying tech that has caused this big jump in generative AI is already maxed out. ChatGPT basically inhaled the entire internet and is still scrambling to find more tokens for diminishing returns. We’re not going to see another leap in its current iteration, so the technology will be turned into more specialized tools and integrated into other applications. I expect animation and game dev to make massive use of generative AI and well see more Chatbots stashed around doing whatever.

Different (software) technology is needed for another comparative jump. The hardware side is well on its way with GPUs and other architectures seeing such massive economic success. Transformers (the T in GPT) may be a part of that, but it will likely need another breakthrough entirely. The fact a model can inhale the internet and only be what it currently is is proof the architecture itself is limited as far as pushing for some kind of AGI. ChatGPT currently employs the worlds foremost expert on neuroevolution, maybe we’ll see generative architectures. I don’t think mono architectures or anything designed by a human will get much further than we’re currently at, we need to start making AI (or at least evolutionary algos) create AI.
