Yes all foreign objects, no matter how big or small are either pushed back out or processed by the body. There are materials that are more biocompatible than others, but ultimately the immune system wants an object out of the body.
They know the new implant will fail, the first one only had a 15% success rate in the end. This kind of stuff should be done on animals not humans and I don’t like animal research that much. I guess people have the right to say experiment on me, but it would not have been an option 20 years ago. The field has changed meaning the government for some reason is willing to let this happen when they were not before, used to be 15 years to get to a human trial. Still is for most researchers. Rule number one of being a doctor is do no harm and I hope they succeed at that at least. I wonder how much counseling this guy is going to need if he loses all implant usage.
