I’m a boomer so by definition we are out of touch but What worked for us was withholding retirement and credit union before we see it in our direct deposit. Credit union was emergency fund, car payment and travel / Christmas and birthday, etc. Responsible use of credit cards is important, as in pay off every month. I like to pay with cash as it keeps me from spending money I don’t have. I read that people spend 30% more with credit cards vs paying with cash. When I get a raise I put 1/2 into savings and half for us. You need to find what works for you but in general saving is necessary for most of us who are not trust fund babies. Putting Starbucks, DoorDash, and impulse purchases on credit cards can get you in trouble quickly but you can budget for fun and occasional splurges. Sorry, but sounds like you have grown up if asking these questions.
