I expected something in this vein, it's also what many Venezuelan friends have experienced. In the US we drew a sharp distinction between Communism and Capitalism, but socialism was more ambiguous until the Obama years when opposition politicians attempted to make it a scary term.

I feel expressions and experiences of socialism can vary widely, as can "freedom" or "liberty" - though I acknowledge those are more conceptual terms and not economic theory. But the point is that what some people in my country call "freedom" is experienced by others as oppressive.

Recently there was a shooting at a large city gathering to celebrate the championship victory of a sports team. Hundreds of thousands of people, and one person fired a gun.

The response in the aftermath from some people was that in order to maintain the freedom espoused in the Second Amendment, we should not be holding large public events like parades or celebrations any more.

It is a strange thing to call that freedom.

So I very much appreciate that you and I might have different reactions to hearing the term socialism. And I agree that we face a challenge in helping emerging generations (and too many older people who have grown numb or forgotten) to understand the horrors of our previous mistakes and not to fall into the temptations of shallow, easy answers to difficult problems. That is true of fascism, nationalism, communism, greed.

With all the benefits we have of history, repeating similar mistakes is an expensive and terrible indulgence.
