And that is why I am saying that safely networking devices is possible. Everyone here seems to be forgetting that you can use routers to establish subnetworks, firewalls to white/blacklist network traffic, clear network segmentation, etc....

There are plenty of tools available nowadays to ensure safe networking of industrial devices. Air gaps are one of those tools, but often fail, because people become complacent or introduce rogue hardware (such as LTE modems) to the system. It's not as easy as pulling THE plug. This might even be harder in critical infrastructure because their stuff often is distributed across many miles.

Things can be done correctly and safely, but unlike IT, OT (operational technologies) have long been ignored. So there is a few challenges of cultural and technical nature.
