I member during covid tons and tons of people getting lots of raises, whereas others had to close up shop and were laid off or had hours cut to impossibility. You know the old bit, right - when my neighbor loses his job it's just business but when I lose mine it's a recession? On average we have seen surprisingly strong wage growth, and even the lowest quintile has seen some. But people cannot always square away their personal experience against the statistics. Worse, internet doomerism, especially pushed by reactionaries of various stripes (though generally more to one end of the political spectrum when dems are in office), and by young kids on reddit without careers, and just generally angry people, not to mention bots and troll farms - has convinced a lot of folk that it's actually terrible out there. Economically it really isn't; the country is doing shockingly well. Some people of course aren't winning. The average is, even if they might not see it sometimes.
