Past performance is not a guarantee of future performance.
And no, I'm not referring to price.
The truth is as coinbase drops, mining is going to become ever more reliant on fees, and in another couple of halvings that should really start to bite. Assuming people will pay huge fees, or time transactions to when things are cheaper is really not any kind of answer. LN is not a general purpose scaling solution, and even if it was it drains fees from L1, making matters worse. Bitcoin is already not well decentralised, and this could make matters much worse, leaving it open to attack.
All of crypto is a huge experiment in technology, economics and politics, and we have to prepare for the path not to be a smooth one. It's quite likely Bitcoin protocol will either have to change, or face a slow drift into further irrelevance as a digital cash.
While a handful of dedicated people mine on laptops, Bitcoin won't die, we can imagine some museums doing it to upkeep the protocol alive, but as a global P2P electronic cash, the story is pretty much already at an end.
Sad.
