“Why is the assumption that everything is some sort of character judgment?  “

Maybe because that’s exactly how people get treated when they ask for help? My experience is that it gets put in pretty much EXACTLY those terms “well what did you go to school for THAT for” followed up with nothing of any value.

To explain a decent bit of my rage at life the universe and everything, I graduated in 2012, and ended up in retail management by way of a random quick promotion and no other job offers. This then led to a layoff and about a year on EI (my actual field wanting experience, and retailers thinking I didn’t have enough time for direct hire management but too much to stock shelves). EI shoves me into a career counselling program whose BRILLIANT advice beyond “urban planning isn’t in demand, why’d you get that degree” (horseshit, now I’m in we’re actually desperately short of trained people) was “why are you looking outside retail, you can’t expect a full time job and what did you bother with online applications for? They don’t work.” That last piece was given to me, on my way out the door, having secured a job but with the counselling service PISSED I stopped coming to sessions, having first tried to threaten me with some kind of noncompliance report to EI then trying to suggest that applying to the LCBO meant I wasn’t following their advice. As far as I can tell the ONLY thing they wanted to actually do was direct people into part time gigs at Canadian Tire.

tl;dr FUCK Woodgreen… at least their employment side of things.
