It's actually almost impossible to convert office space to residential in large buildings.

Like the empty skyscrapers in NYC would literally be cheaper to tear down and rebuild.

But then when potential demand for office space becomes an issue again we have another space squeeze.

That said, my area has a pile of old factories they've been outfitting to be apartments. They got about half of them converted and then stopped because a bunch of NIMBYS thought it was encouraging immigrants to move in and "bring crime and drugs."

So now we have a boom in crime due to homelessness instead...
