Raising retirement ages isn’t a sustainable solution, although it can be part of the solution. If the retirement age is 65, raising the age to 70 means that a cluster of people stops collecting retirement benefits and goes back to work. But that’s nowhere near enough productivity to sustain the 70+ folks forever, especially as the proportion of people below 70 continues to shrink.
The mandatory savings policy is a good approach *from the perspective of a government that doesn’t want to pay*, but it’s also still not a solution. Somebody needs to work for those companies that the retirees are invested in so they can make money. Somebody needs to work and pay taxes to fund the government bonds that the retirees are invested in. There is no solution where the UK survives as a state with a population of pensioners, whether they’re privately- or publicly-funded. Somebody has to do work at some point!
