I wasn't actively looking but saw a job that looked really interesting. I polished my resume, wrote a nice cover letter, and submitted it. At the bottom of the posting the CEO/Job Poster had a note that said he welcomed people to reach out and make contact. Wrote a quick note about how I wasn't looking but that I've been doing research and looking into what his company is trying to do for a while now. Ended with something along the lines of, no matter what direction he takes, I think his company is doing a lot right that a lot of others are doing wrong, and I'd be happy to make the connection even help make any industry connections I have that might be helpful... crickets. I was literally the first to respond to the job posting and when I looked back a week later only 10 people had responded.
