I was being crass due to the general demographics of those who have these wonderful economic takes. Though I will say I have never met a particularly thoughtful woman that was genuinely concerned about effective family planning societal backsliding. And I would go so far as to disagree with anyone who would make the claim, as I think a truly free labor market that includes free movement of labor (very straightforward, open immigration systems) would largely solve any problems that would arise from lower birth rates.

I agree surveys like this fail to explain the trade off. And to add, I’ve personally met a lot of child free people who will say they don’t want kids because of the cost when explaining their choices to strangers, but who will say that they have no interest in sacrificing their personal freedoms and time amongst friends. They don’t want to deal with the weird stigma “normal” (in the life-script sort of way) people put on them for being honest about it. As such, I have reason to believe some may also not be honest with pollsters for things like this.
