To me this isn't an investing thing, it's just personal finance.

Letting splurges compete with my budget made budgeting frustrating. My budget now has a line item and fund for "Miscellaneous" that can can blow on whatever I want. The only limit is how much money is there to be blown. Now it's not a competition between my bills/saving/investing and what I want, rather, my wants compete with only time: I can have a playstation as soon as that Misc account has $500 in it, and what's happening with my IRA is irrelevant.
