Hi all! I am 24 and would like to start a retirement fund. I'll preface this by stating I know very little about this stuff. I'm trying to learn but there is so much to learn!

I've been browsing the web a bit and most seem to recommend a Roth IRA with Vanguard/Fidelity. I'm interested in a Roth IRA due to the tax free withdrawals (once I'm retired? A bit confused on when the tax free is applicable). I currently have about 30k in my checking account, and I'm planning on dispersing most of that into the Roth IRA and a HYSA so it's not just depreciating in my checking anymore, and then regularly adding to them with new income that I earn.

Here is where my question comes in - I have an account with American Century that my grandfather had set up for me when I was a kid and then gave it to me once I was an adult. I currently have about $35k in a growth fund there. I occasionally add money to it, but otherwise I don't really know anything about it.

Here are my questions:

1. I'm a bit confused on growth fund vs Roth IRA? Based on my research it seems like I can have a growth fund within a Roth IRA, am I understanding this correctly? What are the reasons to do this vs keeping it separate?

2. If I keep the growth fund separate from the Roth IRA, should I keep it with American Century or move it to Vanguard/Fidelity? How much should I invest in that vs Roth IRA vs HYSA?

Overall I'm just not sure what the best course of action is for the growth fund I have with American Century.
