I've been using endeavour OS on my gaming laptop for over a year now. It's not perfect, but it works 99.9% of the time. I recommend AMD hardware because the open-source graphics drivers are better than Nvidia, but it's probably fine to use either.

Valve has done incredible things with proton (which is built on top of the incredible things that were already done with wine), and there are *very* few games that I've tried that didn't work right out of the box. I always find it funny when running a microsoft game like Halo on Linux works better than it does on windows. Even third-party mod launchers work. I tried R2Modman for Risk of Rain 2, and it works out of the box.
