If you put a fixed amount every month into the 401k or IRA it should start to feel like a bill you pay every month, like rent or food. You get used to having less spending money and your budget for that adjusts. After a while it becomes automatic and you kind of forget about it and if you let the money sit in solid investments, over the years it compounds and eventually makes you rich.
Another thing I’ve found helpful is tracking software where you can put your discretionary spending into categories. You look at that over a few months and it really smacks you in the face. If you see how many hundreds or thousands went to something you may buy that’s not really important to you without giving it much thought that makes it easy to change your behavior. It becomes really clear when you see how much money you go through in an average year on stuff you probably won’t miss much. Having good data is key to making better decisions. You really want to take as much emotion out of your money decisions as possible.
