People need to understand that spoofing SMS is not an elaborate trick. When sending an SMS from an online service, you literally have to enter the sender number or text manually, and you can enter anything. To send a legit SMS, you have to manually enter your own number.
Your cell provider does zero checks, they are not part of this, they just forward the message with the same text and sender they received.
When the user receives it, the phone will just put the new SMS under the same conversation as previous messages from that same number or text, which is why you can have legit and illegitimate texts in the same conversation.
These days (unlike 10 years ago), most of the serious SMS providers will require approval to use a number or text. But I'm sure it's incredibly easy to find a providers with no such checks.
