Since the only way to advance for them is a slow grind, it makes sense to extend the line of contact because they can maximize km2 of stolen land. It takes a long time to grind static defenses to rubble with FABs and artillery, so the more static defenses they can assault simultaneously, the faster they can slowly chip away more land.

This incidentally also maximizes their losses, because their advances are very costly, but I don't think Putin will magically start caring that Russian soldiers are dying.

Currently Ukraine cannot effectively counterattack (thanks to the republican controlled House), so maybe they think that they can afford to do this without much risk?
