They clearly wanted her voice because it is reminiscent of similar tech in “Her.” Open AI knows exactly what they’re doing here. They play dumb and just try to get away with whatever they can. Ask for forgiveness later rather than permission.

Instead of going a different route they used a different actress that sounds conveniently like her. People can argue it sounds nothing like her but they’re wrong. It does. If it didn’t, millions of users wouldn’t say “that sounds like Scarlett Johansson.” Ford did the same thing in the 80’s when they got an impersonator to sing like Bette Midler in their ad campaigns. Voices should definitely be protected against unauthorized use. It’s pretty basic common sense. Especially for technology like this which the general public will be interacting with on a daily basis.

It’s ironic and depressing to see AI companies watering down what copyright, IP and image rights are while shrewdly protecting their own copyright, IP and image rights.

Companies that want this kind of monopoly off the backs of other people’s hard work and entire persona should be looked on with great suspicion. Theyre just hoping the technology will bamboozle people enough for them to look the other way. And it’s working for the die hard tech fan bois.
