In *Berlin*. **Berlin.** A city that is, quite rightly, full of monuments to past crimes, precisely so that we can *see* this change. The fact that Germany is no longer what it was. Removing memorials to the victims of these horrible crimes is deeply shameful. I walk around Berlin every day and pass memorials for the murdered Jews, LGBTQ+, Roma, and others. I see these things in the town I live in here. There is a large memorial plaque to the deported Jews from my town at the local train station I pass through every day. I am Jewish and the sheer fact that I feel safe living here is a testament to why these monuments are important. Things change. The past doesn't. We need something to compare the present to.
