I feel you! I err on the side of assuming they’ve been a bit brainwashed, I’ll even play along and find some small part I agree with.

A good example is I’m non-binary/trans myself, and some of my relatives are very republican - if a relative expresses anti-trans, I’ll throw in “yeah, those xenogender people ARE quite crazy, I have no problem with real trans people though.” Sometimes that will convince them to be supportive of me down the line, and save a relationship.
