I don't hear Tom saying that there is only one way to build a wallet.

I think he's just highlighting what might break if we change things. People will not be happy if things break.

Why? Because eliminating history is part of the white paper. You can't say you assumed it would already be there, when the author of the system from the very go said it would be systematically erased.
