But automation means fewer workers are needed to toil in manufacturing. Offshoring, trade, and lax regulations means cheaper labor and compliance and other costs in other countries are more preferable.

Computerization means less need knowledge workers. Peak demand for knowledge work was 25 years ago.

But the population keeps grow: Reproduction, Longevity, Internal Migration, Immigration.

So of course, people are going to be desperate. Like playing a game of job musical chairs for the last few chairs.
