I'm something of a Civil War nerd, not because I wanted to be but because I can't afford to go see European battlefields. I watched the Gettysburg Wow Address and I think I know what happened.
I think that whomever was handling Trump tried to prepare him by having him watch two movies: *Gods and Generals* followed by *Gettysburg.* My guess is that he only really paid attention to the first one. (Full disclosure: I heard that film is awful and I didn't watch it.)
In Gods and Generals there is a recreation of the Battle of Fredericksburg, where Union (not Confederate) units including several Irish units attempt to storm the hill at Marye's Heights.
Now as I said, I didn't watch that film but I think it's possible that somewhere near that Fredericksburg scene one of the Irish characters has something to say about fighting uphill.
Later in that film Lee's best general, Stonewalll Jackson, dies. Which is the other thing Trump remembered.
In the next film it's Joshua Chaimberlain and his Irish buddy who have the uphill advantage, and it's possible that Trump wanted to reflect upon the irony of Lee failing to learn the lesson he'd just taught only six months before.
But he's a doofus, so... wow, what a battle, never fight uphill, me boys.
