The reasons for the decline of birthrates is clearly FAR larger than simply affordability.

The stats from countries that have given *enormous* economic benefits and economic relief when having kids...also have terrible rates.

It's likely coming from a conglomerate of pressures:

We have inexpensive birth control. This is a fantastic change long term for society. It allows partners to plan. It allows women tremendously more autonomy...We still need to improve our birth control drugs as too many women have negative mental and/or physical effects directly from the drugs, and thus cannnot take them when they would prefer it sans problems, and we need drugs that men can take...hopefully that comes in time.

Kids are no longer an economic benefit. This one has been around for a *long* time, but it's still an enormous pressure against high birthrates relative to a mere couple centuries ago. In subsistence farming societies, additional kids were a benefit economically. Preparing kids to thrive in a modern (past century, and increasingly more as time goes on) environment takes resources without payback until they become adults. This again leads to more *planning*.

Our relative wealth increases for everyone over the past decades/centuries. The vast majority of our population have more economic choise than in the past. This mixes with the affordability of contraceptives...imagine families in the past....if they were given choice and more wealth, I highly suspect that more of them would have behaved like us....more *planning*.

Then there is also momentum. Humanity has long had very large families. We have built religions and societal pressures to continue such behavior. That had been chipped away (for good reasons IMO) over time, for decades/centuries....we *no longer have that momentum en masse*. Nowhere close.

And more.

It's fuckin complicated. It objectively isn't simply from the cost of having a kid in modern society. Many of our best are trying to figure it out and haven't yet.
