You won’t get liquidated or margin called on a 401(k) loan due to investments dropping below a maintenance requirement. A 401(k) loan is different than a margin loan.
But I’m also no advocate for 401(k) loans -
Failure to pay will result default which will force the loan to become a permanent withdrawal (heavily penalized with taxes and fees)
You miss out on compound growth over the loan term
The loan is paid back with *post*-tax dollars, vs pre-tax as they first when in, which are then taxed again at withdrawal in retirement
In most cases, you are tied to your job for that time period. Termination of employment - voluntary or involuntary - will result in the loan being called. Failure to pay *that* results in default, see point #1
