Out of necessity, Germans in the 1950s didn't "see the light" so to speak and many surveys from the era generally indicate that many Germans still saw the Allied powers as hypocrites, the Jews as "partially responsible" for the war, and Germany as a victim rather than perpetrator. They still understood that any future they hoped to have was dependent on good relations with the rest of Europe, which meant having to clamp down on Nazism as a movement for the sake of restoring their credit and actually build a future for themselves.

Allegedly, more than a handful of officials in the German Foreign Office in the 1949-1950s period also apparently wanted to pay those massive 'reparations' to Israel because they believed that a powerful Jewish cabal controlled the United States and that Germany needed to appease them. Needless to say that's not a very "de-nazified" idea.
