The way Japan and West Germany were handled was actually largely the same, the overwhelming majority of Nazi Party members remained working in the German bureaucracy, economy, etc. and the Allies themselves considered De-Nazification to be a failed project and cancelled it, on Chancellor Adenauer's request, by the time Eisenhower got elected.

East Germany on the other hand is a funnier case because they really were "cleansed" of all former Nazi party apparatchiks, yet nowadays former East German states like Sachsen and Mecklenburg are by far the most Far-Right in Germany. Funny how these things turn out after 7 decades.
