That’s such an open question. It’s impossible for us to answer. If you’re buying real estate in Shitopia the war torn South American country you’ve never heard of, then probably it’s not a great idea.

Even if we knew the city, we don’t know the conditions, the housing there, anything. You’re not talking about a stock which we can evaluate just knowing the name. You’re talking about about an extremely broad concept.

If you provided us all the details, we might know, but it would be too much information for the forums. We’re not exactly individual real estate advisors.

In general, I recommend not borrowing from 401(k) unless it’s your primary residence and you really have any need. I’m not sure you’re able to do that, but if you are, it doesn’t seem especially prudent, considering the markets been in bull territory for like a decade or something. It seems unlikely any property you get is going to do better than the market.

That’s based off of about a century of data comparing to S&P 500 to real estate and all the major markets in the United States. But I think it’s especially true now.
