Something like 75% of even VC-backed startups fail. I think a lot of folks have rose-colored glasses about their employer. I know that sounds weird because a lot of folks hate their work, but it's true.
I invest in my private company, but not a lot. Anything can go belly-up. In my case the only real reason to invest now before IPO is guaranteed is to avoid AMT when the ISOs are not much cheaper than the FMV.
If the company says they're going IPO next year, I believe that the wheels should solidly be in motion. You can't simply 'IPO' on a whim. They need to have KPMG or EY or whatever in there. They need to have been doing serious audits on every system for the last few years. They need to have an underwriter for the IPO already in talks.
At least that's my understanding. I'd be a little wary with so few details, but he if it's a small % of your cash it's not the worst idea to gamble a little of it.
