It's a huge misconception (the usual half-truths that keep getting passed around in reddit comments) that denazification was completely useless. Yes, there was a relatively quick shift towards an anti-communist priority after a few years and yes, a number of high-profile Nazis managed to squeeze through and get themselves rehabilitated that probably shouldn't have. But the process itself still _worked_, and it was widely applied across the country, not just for the highest ranking officials. "Denazification" didn't just mean throwing top Nazis into prison, it worked its way through the entire population and applied measured sanctions depending on severity of their affiliation with the Nazis (e.g. things like just not being allowed to work in public service or having their freedom of speech restricted). And more importantly, even though some people "slipped through", it deeply imparted upon the entire country that these ideas and opinions were _bad_ and not to be promoted publicly. Even those old Nazis who managed to remain in powerful positions knew that they'd have to play along with the new programme or they'd quickly get the axe after all. That may not have been justice but it still was effective in making sure that the general attitude of the country (and the opinions that the next generation grew up with) got shifted in the right direction.
