People tend to forget that navigation and precision in WW2 was fucking awful. We had instances where we bombed allied territory because some piece of equipment wasnt correctly functioning or the pilots flew a few degrees off for too long and then the bombs were dropped at the time they were supposed to on a city vaguely the shape of what they were targeting. After those bombs drop? Wind can blow them off course enough to miss their target completely.

Carpet bombing wasnt because of revenge or cruelty, it was because the only accuracy to be found was to level the fuck out of an entire gridsquare because the bombers would be shot down way early if they flew much lower.
