Back of the envelop calculation says that if you put that $26k into an IRA with decent investment choices, it'll provide you with about the same level of pension, but you'll have at least $500k left over to leave to your kids when you die .. instead of nothing from the pension. Note that in 30 years that $500k will only buy what $200k buys today. Obviously all that is notional, past performance, yada yada yada.
