Is there any partial add on from the employer? Now that my company is a Fortune 500, we can buy company shares through their preferred platform (Fidelity), and they kick in a partial percentage match.
They don't do any award shares at all? Even for x years of service? Its probably still worth investing some into the company, especially if your husband thinks it's got growth and future sale potential, but maybe not as much as if they were giving employees shares or a match.
Basically, what this program says to me, is they have faith that the shares have value, but that they want people to have to wait and see, and only if they're willing. I would expect the execs have a lot of RSU's and don't want to have to share wealth later on, if it explodes.
