Yeah I made my comment as someone who used to dream of flying, played flight sims for 700 hours when I was younger and wanted to do that as a job, and watches a lot of airplane flying videos on Yotuube. To me, it appears that having at the very least super simple terrain safety systems is pretty common in aircraft, and has been for a while. Not necessarily the Cessnas that everyone is flying, but once you get to slightly bigger/more advanced planes, just from the videos I've seen, simple terrain systems are pretty common.

After getting like 100 comments, I now understand that this is not anywhere near as common for helicopters. It's apparently become slightly more popular as of late, but is still far from as widespread as it is in planes. I'm going to assume that this is because flying helicopters in IMC is just inherently more dangerous than planes (in a plane you can get high enough you don't have to worry about hitting anything, heli altitudes are extremely limited in comparison, which means any IMC flying will inherently be closer to obstacles and therefore inherently more dangerous

Even if the heli was old retrofitting safety equipment is fairly common (which is why you can find Cessnas from 1980s with fairly modern equipment/instruments). I would assume that a heli carrying the President would likely have all the necessary safety equipment. So for now my assumption is that this was probably just a tale as old as time.
