As someone who is a young Korean-Canadian, I’m so revolted by this. I grew up with stories from older generations about how disappointed they were about the wartime actions of the Japanese military. They never blamed the Japanese citizens of today, only the government that tried to bury it. From comfort women to unpaid labor and human experimentation, there’s not enough people voicing those that have been silenced. And for those saying, “oh, “x” country also did this and that” - yes, they did. We know. I’m aware of many modern-day Korean citizens that grew up post-Korean war who criticize how the American administration took advantage of a vulnerable population as well. We are not excusing anyone from this conversation, but this discussion primarily focuses on the lack of responsibility and empathy from the perpetrators of horrific crimes. “Apologies” of the past have often come from insincere talks between politicians, excluding many of the comfort women entirely. I always grew up with awe for those willing to establish memorials and take initiative to speak up for silenced populations. To neglect an entire period in history, an entire generation where girls my age and younger were being raped, abused, and scarred for life, I cannot understand what part of this discussion indicates “skewed history”. Absolute ignorance at its finest.
