Can’t say it’s the *smartest* but yeah an S&P index fund with low fees is pretty safe money that will continue to grow unless the economy completely collapses.
Personally I might do a 4:1 or 3:2 split VOO and BRK/B, just to take on a slight bit more risk/reward. Once we lose Buffett, might have to watch BRK/B a little closer to make sure it’s not mismanaged. But it’s been solid. If that’s too much risk, all VOO.
Good luck, have fun
Edit: to be clear, I don’t think total index funds or small caps will outperform VOO in the long run. For short durations, they can. Generally when a big company like google size collapses. But during large economic crises, small companies go out of business, and large companies cut back. That’s the nice thing about the s&p 500, it’s always tracking the biggest companies. If one is dethroned, so be it, your money is immediately moved over to the next.
Also, I’ve been following the C, S, and I funds for 20 years. Large cap, small cap and international investment funds, respectively, for the TSP (government retirement plans). Over that period, the S and I fund have nearly always lost to the C fund. I know you can’t predict the future based off the past, but man it seems stupid to keep putting money in the S and I for the sake of diversifying.
There may be a time to pull money out of large cap. But now isn’t the time. The Amazons, Apples, googles, and teslas continue to make money.
