Say I make a million dollars in a year. Also say I buy a teardown house and put $5k of renovation into it but inflate the numbers to tell the IRS I put a million dollars into it. And then it burns down. Or I burn it down and get away with it, whichever. I claim my million dollar loss in conjunction with my million dollar paycheck and to the IRS, I've made no money this year and owe no taxes. Sure I've taken some actual losses but significantly less than paying taxes on my million dollar income.
