A class action suit should make those affected as whole as possible. If you're screwed over before the suit, you shouldn't get a pittance while the law firm that went to court over it can get much more (should be read as most of the judgement). Sure they should get what their counsel cost, but they shouldn't get a windfall while everyone else gets only percentage points on what they lost. Seems to defeat the reason why class action suits are a thing. If I'm out thousands, but only get $20, while the law firm gets much much more than what it cost them to to provide counsel, it's not really worth it to anyone but the lawyers. I've known about a dozen people that have been part of a class action (I know it's a small sample size), and only one got over $100 even though they all lost hundreds to tens of thousands. Guy that lost like 10k to a predatory certification school got like $300.
