Games today are significantly cheaper than when I was a kid in the 80s. NES games ran about $50, which is around $140 today inflation-adjusted. Only rich kids owned a lot of games, the rest of us rode our bikes to the rental store and maybe got one or two owned games per year if we were lucky.
They’d likely be more expensive if everyone bought physical copies retail. The retail part hasn’t gone away, it’s just Microsoft or Sony or Steam taking that cut instead of physical stores. Maintaining those stores and serving downloads costs real money, so it hasn’t done away with all the retail overhead.
Companies put a ton of money into development, that’s the bulk of the cost. GTA 6 reportedly will cost over $1 billion to make. Granted they’ll make it back in days after release, but must recoup their investment.
