I work in the facilities dept supervising construction projects/project management and am on a large electrical upgrade project. There's 8-12 union electricians on the project daily. One of them 2 years ago was a recent electrical engineering grad. She couldn't get a job because she had no work experience. Her final two years were spent in isolation so no internships or research projects.

What she did have, was initiative to search for a path forward career-wise, even if it wasnt at all what she planned for when starting college. She had the courage to join a 99% male, physically taxing field. And she had the humility to admit that her engineering degree didn't make her too good for certain jobs or for a certain amount of pay (1st years started at 15/hr and don't top out to 45/hr until finishing their 5th year).

I encouraged my supervisor to fill our opening in my group with her. He did.

It's a sample size of one, but hopefully more kids will be seen for their potential rather than their resume; and hopefully more managers will realize that on the job training is really all you need for the plurality of all careers.
