Here's the rub.

For life for parents to be easier, life for non-parents has to get harder (relatively, and possibly absolutely).

If we wait until parents are in the minority, and we're late to the problem, reversing course will require sudden changes to make life harder for non-parents in absolute terms (like sudden tax hikes/benefits) This will be deeply unpopular, given the majority doesn't have children, and so we won't do it, or will only accomplish it through authoritarian means.

If we act NOW, while parents are still in the majority, we can concentrate gains from productivity growth on parents.

But we're not gonna act now. We never do.
