There's a balance to be had with parenting, but I think we've swung a bit too far towards helicoptering kids and needing them to be involved in a thousand activities. As a kid in the 90s my dad never played with us and my mom did infrequently. We played with our friends or each other, not with our parents (although I do have a lot of fond memories of my mom playing video games with us or going bike riding with us).

Parents are really concerned about not traumatizing children, which is noble, but you also can't baby them too much or they end up sheltered and incapable of being independent.
