Wow, going up from 1% is crazy. I think 1% is already way too high. Is she really getting $10k (now $12500) worth of service from them every year? Trading stocks is free and a three-fund portfolio can also be set up for free (sure someone doing that for someone else should get something but $12k per year is robbery). Hopefully she's getting more than that - advice, etc, but still - does she really need 12k of advice a year?
Also - don't chase returns, chase diversification. There's nothing inherently wrong with investing in individual value stocks but it's a bet that the market will go a particular way. If you admit you don't know and just buy the market you're likely going to be better off. An AUM financial advisor will tend to trade more than they should just to show they are doing something. If as an amateur, you trade more (or buy higher risk assets) the odds are very much against you. If you invest in broad based index funds, this is a good strategy and you don't need someone else to do that for you. Good advice can be had for less than $12k too.
