I think a big part of the issue is that people no longer want to do things “because that is what you did”. My wife and I will probably only have a single child due to the cost, but the difficulty factor once you have 2+ can’t be overstated. My family members with multiple kids are all burned out, and that’s not a life we want for ourselves. We’ve got hobbies and interests and careers we are pursuing. Not to mention we only just became what most people would consider middle class just 20 years ago and it took almost a decade of grinding.
Our entire economy depends on endless growth in a finite world. If we can’t figure out a way to grow our economy without infinite population growth then sooner or later something has got to change.
