This is completely wrong. Germany made quick inroads against a totally unprepared Soviet army during the initial stages of Barbarossa particularly during the first several weeks after June 22nd 1941. But they failed to take Moscow and by early 1942 were bogged down all over the Soviet Union bleeding troops and resources, lacking proper supplies and low morale.

The Russians had more men and equipment (great tech btw, including arguably the best tanks of the war) even though it took them a long time to mobilize and figure out how to fight. After Moscow the Nazis had some smaller offensives, including driving south to Stalingrad in a desperate attempt to capture resources, but in the big picture they were steadily driven out of Russia by a better-equipped and motivated Red Army.

All that's to say that the Red Army was overrunning the Nazis well before the US landed at Normandy on D-day.

The biggest contribution the US made in Europe was pushing the post-WW2 USSR "sphere of influence" back. Stalin surely would have attempted to occupy as much territory west of Germany as he could had the US not been driving to Berlin at roughly the same time.

I would argue if anything that Westerns are taught a version of the war in Europe that de-emphasizes the Soviet Union's role.
