You raise an interesting question, and I do think that Israel’s right to defend itself was clear under international law following the October attacks.
However, much proof has been raised regarding the indiscriminate nature of Israel’s invasion of Gaza, and handling this in such a destructive way is bound to only cause more and more armed resistance which will only create future Hamas-esque groups and affiliates.
There is a lot to be said about that, but Israeli actions in Gaza are fulfilling many of the prerequisites needed to classify this as an active genocidal operation.
The IDF permits toppling of private, public buildings as well as infrastructure for the sake of destruction or ’deterrence’. According to Israeli intelligence sources w first-hand experience in Gaza, it is intended to ’harm Palestinian civil society’. unnecessarily destroying civilian property is a war crime. After each bombing, no assessment is made to save time, making it unclear whether any Hamas have actually been killed and how many civillians have died, making Israeli statistics VERY non-reliable.
A UN executive in the occupied territories in the report ’Anatomy of a Genocide’ reports that 70% of deaths have consistently been women and children. Israel fails to prove that the remaining 30% (adult men) are active Hamas militants, a necessary condition for them to be lawfully targeted. By early December, Israel reported the killing of 7000 terrorists, when not even 5000 adult males had been identified casualties. This implies that all adult males are terrorists, an indication of indiscriminate targetting, labelling often innocent civillians as combatants by default.

Residential Gaza is now mostly destroyed which disproves any argument of human shields. 42% of Israeli bombs in the first 6 weeks of conflict were dropped in designated safe-zones, making up 38% of Palestinian deaths. Safe zones were deliberately made into killzones which Israel would bomb without regard for civillian lives.
On the 21st of December, an Israeli airstrike at Kerem Shalom border crossing killed the director responsible for entry of humanitarian aid, making it clear that there is an intent to undermine efforts to bring aid to Gaza. The attack was critical to blocking flow of aid, and such an indiscriminate policy of starvation is a terrible crime. There have also been numerous instances of Israel targeting aid convoys, clearly marked as UN or otherwise and with their locations and routes communicated to Israeli military authorities. They were deliberately targeted nonetheless.
These attacks are a part of a systematic and overarching policy which Israel has adopted, evident from the frequent and almost daily occurence of such events. These are all clear signs that Israel is indiscriminately killing both civillians and combatants in the Gaza strip.
Despite Israel’s attempted justification of these acts, their actions and blatant defiance of international law proves that their intents are not only to supress Hamas, but to place postwar Gaza in such a state where future resistance will be impossible due to the sheer destruction caused by these operations.
