One facet that doesn’t get talked about enough is the effect that religion plays on birth rates.
At all income and education levels, and controlling for political affiliation, religious women have more children than their non-religious counterparts.
In America religious women have about 2.1 children on average (which is just about at replacement rate), while non religious women have about 1.4 children on average, which is comparable to Japan.
While economics obviously plays a big role in birth rates declining, so does increasing secularization and the cultural and world view changes that go along with it.
