Rocket Lab has been tight lipped about what kind of constellation they want to build, but they have given some clues so far.
1) they want to disrupt an existing service with a proven market (they don’t rely on first mover advantage and are happy to be a solid second place option) so in this sense a comms service checks out
2) they don’t have the capital to build a mega constellation in the thousands like StarLink and want to build a service from “dozens to hundreds” of satellites instead which is more cost effective
3) they recently raised $300M to pursue inorganic growth opportunities aka payload capabilities at a discount which will telegraph their long term strategy regarding what kind of constellation to build
4) currently their Archimedes engine is imminently preparing for a hotfire test at Stennis - this is the bottleneck to their Neutron program - once this hurdle is overcome, contracts and acquisitions are likely to follow in Q3 and Q4 of this year
In summary, Neutron is the current priority for Rocket Lab but management clearly has plans to use their new rocket for the purposes of adding a space services stream of revenue within the next 3-5 years. There is almost zero probability they would choose to compete directly with StarLink however the potential for the service they do decide to move on will surely 10x this stock.
